Ushering Job Description

Volunteer | | Pam Van Londen | May 6, 2008 |

Prior to Performance

  • Be at the performance facility at least 45 minutes prior to the concert, or as requested by the head usher.
  • If, for some reason, you are unable to fulfill your usher duties, you are asked to find your own replacement.
  • Put on your name tag and let the head usher know you are available.
  • You will be assigned a door and a task: handing out programs or taking tickets.
  • Assist people with special needs or who may need extra time for seating (disabled, elderly) by escorting them in early, before doors open to the general audience.  You may need to look for them in your line.
  • No early seating is otherwise allowed.
  • Programs may be handed out to people waiting in line, except at June concert when scholarship winners insert is included.
  • Open the doors to allow seating when told to do so by the head usher or head concert coordinator.
  • Let the head usher know if any problems or difficulties arise, or when you need more programs, etc.
  • Close your doors when the performance begins.

During the performance

  • Assist latecomers & try to keep entrances and exits quiet and to a minimum.
  • Note that a seat or two is usually reserved for the ushers at the back of the auditorium by your doors.
  • During the concerts there is usually one time during which you’ll have to open the doors for a choir to enter the auditorium from the back. You will be instructed when/if this should be needed.

During the intermission

  • Open your assigned doors at the beginning of intermission and close them when the concert starts again.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the auditorium. Please have people finish what they have and/or toss these items in the trash cans by the doors before entering.

Following the performance

  • Open the doors
  • When the auditorium empties, please assist us in making a “sweep” to collect all papers and other items left behind.
  • Return your name tags.

Thank you for your assistance!  We could not do this without you.
